NOTES ON ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF RIGHT CIRCULAR CONICAL SHELLS,

Abstract

The report combines several investigations on the analysis and design of thin-walled right circular cones under axial load. In the first part, the axi-symmetrical buckling of monocoque cones of constant wall thickness is solved in a more or less rigorous manner; approximate solutions are given for constant thickness sandwich cones and for cones with stiffeners along the generators, the stiffeners being such that their moment of inertia varies linearly with distance from the vertex. Results for column buckling of right circular cones are discssed. In the second part, the foregoing results for the monocoque cone of constant thickness are used to obtain charts and formulas for minimum weight design. The cones are assumed to be bounded by stiffening rings whose design depends only on those conditions imposed by the cone and its axial load. Analyses are presented for strength, axisymmetric wall buckling, and overall column buckling. Criterions for determining which type of failure is critical for the design of any particular cone are given. (Author)
