NOTE ON THE TRANSIENT OSCILLATIONS OF A SYSTEM INCORPORATING HYSTERETIC DAMPING.

Abstract

The motion of a single degree of freedom viscoelastic system subsequent to an initial impulse is discussed. The logical difficulties inherent in the extension of the 'complex modulus' concept to transient motions are highlighted but it is shown that for currently available materials, for which the loss factor mu rarely exceeds 0.5, these difficulties do not arise. It is found that no solution exists for mu > 1. (Author)
