TEST OF LINE DROPPING CAPABILITY OF 115-KV OIL CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN PALISADES SWITCHYARDS, CONDUCTED MAY 1, 1964, PALISADES IDAHO,

Abstract

Tests were made on a 115-kv, resistor equipped, explosion pot type oil circuit breaker to determine the line dropping capability and characteristics, and to determine if switching surges from operation of these circuit breakers require consideration in margins for over-voltages from unbalanced faults. The breaker under test was first used to switch two lines connected in series, constituting a line length of 100.4 miles, then the breaker was used to switch only one line, 51.7 miles long. All tests were made with point-on-cycle control. Among the three phases of the breaker, operation at all points over the cycle was tested. Bus voltages, line currents, and line voltages were recorded by magnetic oscillograph for all operations. All switching was performed from a main bus energized by two units to provide a low-impedance bus for testing switching characteristics. The breaker performed satisfactorily dropping 51.7 and 100.4 miles of line with charging currents of 20.5 and 45.6 amperes, respectively. No significant switching surges were recorded. (Author)
