TRAVELING DENSITY VARIATIONS IN PARTIALLY IONIZED GASES.

Abstract

The report deals with the problem of the propagation of macroscopic waves of ionization within the positive column of glow discharge tubes. In the literature of this field these waves have been called 'moving striations' because of the visible radiation emanating from the traveling pulse. Both experimental and theoretical analyses of this phenomenon were made. The principal experimental result of this work is the establishment of a linear regime of operation for the observed traveling waves and the artificial excitation of them. The principal theoretical result is the derivation and the analysis of a linear theory that is applicable to the experimental regime of operation. (Author)
