ON THE MECHANISM FOR INSTABILITY OF TRANSVERSE PLASMA WAVES,

Abstract

A physical mechanism is presented for the growth of transverse plasma waves due to an anisotropic velocity distribution. It is shown that in absence of an external magnetic field, curvature of particle trajectories in the fluctuation magnetic field accounts quantitatively for the growth rate calculated from the Boltzmann equation.
