THE ANALYSIS OF WIND-INDUCED OSCILLATIONS OF LARGE AND TALL CYLINDRICAL STRUCTURES,

Abstract

A method of analysis of wind-induced oscillations of large and tall circular cylindrical structures is presented. The changes in the nature of wind-induced oscillations of such structures as the Reynolds number of the flow varies from the subcritical to the transitional and then to the supercritical ranges are discussed. The main body of the paper is concerned with the supercritical case only. It appears that, in order to make a realistic prediction of the vibration characteristics of such a structure in wind, the existing aerodynamic data do not suffice, and additional lift-(and drag-) distribution correlation functions would have to be measured. A list of these desired correlation functions are given and an experimental program is formulated. (Author)
