MOMENTS OF INERTIA AND GRAVITY FIELD OF THE MOON,

Abstract

The surface harmonics derived from an analysis of the data produced by Schrutka-Rechtenstamm and Davidson or Brooks are shown to be in agreement with the observed values of the mechanical ellipticity f, and the quantity beta within the limits of the errors in the harmonics. The correct values of J sub 20 and J sub 22 are derived with the aid of the latest determinations of f and beta by Koziel and Jeffreys, respectively. Finally, the potential of the Moon is derived as a sum of solid harmonics including terms up to the fourth order, on the assumption that the Moon is a homogeneous body. (Author)
