COPOLYMERIZATION WITH TRANSITION METAL CATALYSTS SYSTEMS AND ALKALI AND ORGANOALKALI METAL COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

4-Trifluoromethylpentene-1 and 5, 5, 5-Trifluoropentanol1 were synthesized and characterized. 3-Trifluorobutene-1 was copolymerized with 3-methylpentene-1 and with pentene-1. A theoretical molecular weight dependency on monomer and catalyst concentrations has been calculated for metallic lithium initiated polymerizations. Polymerizations were carried out with various amounts of lithium dispersion and fixed amounts of the other components. By combination of the observed polymerization rates and the observed degrees of polymemerization, the rate cononstant for the anionic propagation was calculated as 40 1/mole . min at 35C. One publication and two manuscripts submitted for publication are attached and summarize work completed to date on the homo and/or copolymerizations of styrene and/or a-d-styrene by heterogeneous TiCl4-Al(C2H5)3 and homogeneous (C5H5)2TiCl2-Al(C2H5)2Cl catalysis.
