LUNAR COLOR PHENOMENA.

Abstract

The USAF Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC) is producing a coordinated series of charts of the moon. One phase of this program is to visually observe areas being charted through long focal length refractor telescopes over considerable lengths of time. During the course of this operation at the Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, Arizona, red coloration appeared in the region of the Aristarchus Crater October 29, 1963 and again November 27, 1963. Opinions as to the cause of the color phenomena have been received from a number of recognized lunar authorities. These opinions are divergent in varying degrees. It is the intent of this paper to record two events of possible scientific significance without hypothesis as to the cause. (Author)
