THE PCM/PS TELEMETRY SYSTEM,

Abstract

The relative transmitter power efficiency of the Pulse Code Modulation/Phase Shift (PCM/PS) system is com pared with other efficient telemetry systems. A unique error correcting coding method is described, and its performance improvement shown. The system operation is explained, and its performance at a signal-to-noise ratio of -8 db in the IF channel is illustrated. Correlation detection of the video pulse signal, synchronous RF reception and a novel redundancy coding method are incorporated in a PCM/PS system which in practice performs as well as the theoretical system analyzed by Nichols and Ranch. Further improvement in transmitter power utilization can be obtained if more efficient redundant codes are employed, at a sacrifice in the simplicity of the transmitting equipment. (Author)
