A GERMAN DISCUSSION OF ATOMIC WEAPONS AND THE LAW,

Abstract

The subject of atomic armament for the Bundeswehr, the newly established armed forces of West Germany is discussed. For the first time the question of the relationship between atomic weapons and the law has been discussed in the German press. On May 18, 1957, a letter to the editor was published in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung uder the heading 'Atomic Weapons and the Law'. The letter is reproduced in translation. Although it furnishes only scant material on the subject, it does present a first definition of the problem, and deals with an issue which may have farreaching political implications.
