THE COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR AN ELASTIC HALFSPACE UNDER A POINT STEP LOAD,

Abstract

The problem of the dynamic response of an elastic halfss space to a unit step load is continued by extending the method developed by the author in a previous paper to include the phenomena of total reflection and Rayleigh surface waves. Confirmation of the method is provided by developing the displacement potentials everywhere in the half-space and showing that, for Poisson's ratio = 1/4, the surface displacements agree identically with the equations of Pekeris. The boundary condition of vanishing surface stress is also verified. The potentials and displacements, expressed in integral form, represent the complete solutulution of the problem. (Author)
