Total Impulse Measuring System for Solid Propellant Rocket Engine: Installation and Operation Handbook
Abstract
The Rocketdyne Solid Propellant Total Impulse Measurement System is an electromechanical instrument which provides very precise measurements of motor thrust and its time-integral, total impulse, at thrust levels up to 10,000 pounds. When in use, the solid propellant motor produces a thrust force which compresses a strain-gage load cell to obtain a dc voltage which is linearly proportional to the thrust force. This dc voltage is applied to input of a voltage-controlled oscillator to produce a train of pulses whose repetition rate is linearly proportional to the dc voltage and, hence, motor thrust. An electronic counter totalizes the number of pulses produced during the propellant burning time, and the number so produced is, consequently, linearly proportional to the time-integral of the thrust, or total impulse, of the burned propellant. The installation, calibration, and operation of the system is described.
