HIGH VACUUM ULTRAVIOLET EFFECTS.

Abstract

Optimum electrical parameters have been determined for use with the three-electrode vacuum spark to obtain proper operation. The discharge viewed 'side-on', with the anode perpendicular to the optical axis, does not yield quite as reproducible results as the discharge viewed 'end-on', where the anode lies on the opticaal axis and just the diameter of the anode is seen. The photon output is larger with the latter arrangement. Both uranium and tungsten anodes have been used and light output measurements show little difference between the two anode materials except below 15 KW. (Author)
