EVALUATION OF THE PRECRACKED DED CHARPY TEST AS A METHOD OF DETERMINING FRACTURE TOUGHNESS OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL ALLOYS,

Abstract

Precracked Charpy test specimens were prepared from three consumable electrode melted high strength sheet alloys, AISI 4340, Ladish D6AC and Unimach II. These specimens were subjected to various austenitizing and tempering conditions and tested at 78F a and -40F. Fracture toughness of these steels, as determined by this method, was compared at various strength levels.
