STUDY OF AN INORGANIC SYSTEM FOR THT THE RECOVERY OF OXYGEN (30 DAY EVALUATION PROGRAM.
Abstract
An inorganic system for the recovery of oxygen was investigated during a 30-day evaluation program. This recovered oxygen was used to provide the metabolic needs of a 3-man crew. The total system was based in sequence on 3 techniniques; (1) CO2 removaal utilizing regenerable absorbers, (2) Sabatier technique for the production of water, and (3) the electrolysis of water. Techniques for the chemical analysis of gaseous constituents and the adequacy of crew accommodations and equipment under the conditions imposed by confinement were also studied. The molecular sieve bed temperature, the Sabatier reacaction gas flows, and the structural integrity of the electrolytic cell are a few operating variables which affected the system's overall operation, maintainability, and efficiency. Gas Chromatography proved to be the most suitable analytical technique for detecting unconcentrated trace quantities. Compounds unique to this evaluation program are given. Findings pertaining to personal hygiene, water, and waste handling are enumerated. (Author)
