JANAIR: Joint Army-Navy Aircraft Instrumentation Research. Analysis of Pictorial Research.

Abstract

The objective of this study is an analysis of the capabilities of pictorial cockpit displays and a definition of the associated sensor and data processing requirements. The study is confined to an examination of raster scan displays. The various missions that are to be studied are: Restricted approach and landing; Low level, high speed flight; Point-to-poiint navaavigation; Weapon noon delivery, air-toair; Weappon delivery, air-to-grground; Tactical air operations; and, ASW operations. A large family of displays must be considered from the point of view of both hardware engineering and the design of the pilot-display interface. A hardware review of display media, sensors, and T. V. bandwidth compression techniques has been started and the progress made is reported. The consideration of the pilot-display interface is discussed.
