STUDY OF FLOW INDUCED IN VISCOELASTIC LIQUID BY A ROTATING CONE,

Abstract

As part of an intensive effort to determine the proper equations for the motion induced in a viscoelastic liquid by a rotating cone, an extensive series of photographs of lines of flow were obtained. The liquid studied was polyisobutylene dissolved in cetane. The flow visualization was obtained by means of a dye which was injected into the liquid in a systematic manner. The photographic study was made for cones of vertex angles 110 and 160 degrees. Some visual observations were also made in the case of a cone of vertex angle 176 degrees. Measurements of both torque and thrust were made on each of the three cones at various angular velocities. (Author)
