PROPAGATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES IN AN INHOMOGENEOUS MEDIUM.

Abstract

This report consists of two parts dealing with; the thermodynamics and dynamics of ionized gasses; and, the influence of finite ionization rates on the wave propagation through ionized gasses. In the first part a non-relativistic phenomenological theory satisfying the Lorentzian invariance of thermodynamic quantities and not based on any a-priori assumption for the form of the electromagnetic momentum density is developed of an arbitrary polarizable medium. In the second part the subject topic is dealt with by using both the one-fluid model and the Lenhert two-fluid model for the plasma.
