A STUDY OF LINE SPECTRA FORMED IN A DIFFERENTIALLY MOVING ATMOSPHERE.

Abstract

Line profiles exhibiting complex quasi-oscillatory displacements and asymmetries have been observed on solar and stellar spectra. In this study observational and theoretical aspects are combined to determine the time and depth variation of gross velocity fields in the regions of the outer solar atmosphere where the cores of the Halpha and K line of Ca II are formed. Methods of expressing line profile asymmetries are discussed and the asymmetries of synthetic profiles are calculated for various velocity and temperature models.
