APPLIED RESEARCH ON METHODS OF COUPLING TO ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES IN PLASMA AMPLIFIERS.

Abstract

The report contains the findings of a feasibility study of directly coupling microwave power to beam-plasma interaction systems without the use of slow wave circuits. Direct coupling is an essential step towards fully utilizing the advantages of beam plasma interaction since conventional slow wave couplers restrict the power handling capabilities and the ease of device fabrication. Theoretical work performed indicates that such coupling is possible by using a long modulation space fed by smooth waveguide. Experimental data give qualitative demonstration of this coupling. Further investigation is recommended and other different approaches are also discussed. (Author)
