CHARACTERISTICS OF A PHOTON COUPLED AMPLIFIER.

Abstract

This report contains a study of the small-signal characteristics of a photon coupled amplifier (PCA). An audio frequency model for the PCA is proposed based on measured static characteristics from six prototype units. The model is used to derive performance characteristics of a common emitter PCA configuration. Results indicate that PCA output impedance and voltage gain are high while input impedance and current gain are low, and that voltage gain can exceed 2000 for high resistive loads. Theoretical performance is verified with measured data from a breadboard circuit. Temperature effects on PCA performance are discussed using experimental data. (Author)
