PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF THE MIG GYRO FOR BALLISTIC MISSILE APPLICATIONS

Abstract

This report describes a series of tests performed on two Minneapolis- Honeywell miniature integrating (MIG) gyros. Performance of gyros during the tests is given in detail, and the philosophy, procedures, and merits of each type of test are discussed. The test program had two objectives: to evaluate the gyros themselves, and to study and compare the various types of tests used in the program. Both of the tested gyros performed within the manufacturer's specifications during the entire program, with the exception of a mass shift occurring in one gyro as a result of excessive vibration applied during a test. Results of different tests of the same gyro characteristics correlated, in most cases, within the expected consistency of gyro performance, indicating satisfactory reliability of the test procedures and equipment.
