ELECTROKINETIC FLOW IN CAPILLARY ELEMENTS.

Abstract

The report contains a general analytical study of electrokinetic flow in channels. It includes the study of electroosmotic flow and the generation of streaming potential. The first part of the report consists of a presentation of the double layer theory and of the diffuse layer theory. An attempt was made to keep the analytical treatment explicit. Particular solutions are developed for the case of small ratios of surface ionic energy to thermal energy and for the case of large capillary radius. The report also contains an analytical study of electrokinetic flow in very fine capillaries. The results of the study suggest the possibility of the practical application of electrokinetic phenomena in pumping, power generation, and instrumentation. The last part of the report examines the efficiencies of the electrokinetic processes and discusses their application. (Author)
