Long Wavelength Infrared Fiber Optics

Abstract

The results of a literature survey for glasses with longer wavelength infrared transmission than arsenic-sulphur glasses are described in detail. The conclusions of this survey are discussed and samples were obtained of some of the selected glasses. The equipment necessary for this program is described and progress on its fabrication reported. Preliminary attempts to draw fibers with the available samples using existing fiber drawing equipment indicated that closer environmental control is necessary to produce seud-free fibers. This was anticipated, and new equipment is now being built.
