EXPANDABLE STRUCTURES FOR SPACE APPLICATIONS

Abstract

This paper summarizes the major types of expandable structures which are as follows; inflatable balloon, rigidized membrane, airmatt, foamed-in-place, expandable honeycomb and variable geometry structures. Emphasis is placed on materials, system characteristics, and advancements required to perfect each type of expandable structure. Finally, a discussion is given on future significant expandable structures experiments that will be conducted by the Air Force.
