ELECTRON-IONIZATION CROSS SECTIONS.

Abstract

Work was devoted to improving the existing equipment. Work areas included the completion and testing of an ultrahigh-gain electron multiplier, the installation of a new quadrupole lens, construction of a simple gas test source, testing of the spectrometer, construction of a new pulse quantizer, theoretical exploration of the ion transmission between the spectrometer and the electron multiplier and studies of the data-handling problems in the pulse electronics. Except for a tendency to short out, the new electron multiplier operates satisfactorily, whereas the new quadrupole lens does not. The pulse electronics has yet to be connected to the multiplier output. Measurement of ionization cross sections is still several months distant. (Author)
