ON THE THEORY OF THE ATOMIZATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS,

Abstract

A formula has been obtained for the coefficient of atomization (spraying) of single crystals which does not have empirical coefficients. It was assumed that the potential of the interacting ions with the atoms of the target U = A/r squared. It is shown that with such a potential there should be screening of the lower atomic layers by the ones lying above, such screening being necessary for explaining the dependence of the coefficient of atomization on the angle of incidence of the ions. There is a computation of the average energy lost by the ion in each atomic layer. For obtaining the numerical value of the coefficient of the atomization it was assumed that the transmission of energy to the surface occurs with the aid of 'focusons.' The 'g. ts. k.' are discussed and there have been taken into account only the 'focusons' in the direction (110). The computed curves of the dependence of the coefficient of atomization on the angles of incidence of the ions are compared with the experimental ones. (Author)
