LARGE SCALE MOVEMENTS OF THE ATMOSPHERE.

Abstract

A formulation of the full equations of motion for a fluid capable of absorbing and emitting grey thermal radiation is presented. The Rayleigh stability problem is investigated for models with a linear basic temperature profile under certain boundary conditions. In general it is found that in this formulation the presence of radiational absorption tends to stabilise the fluid. Finally, the forced motion of a liquid heated from below and subject to a nonlinear basic temperature profile due to internal heat generation is discussed. (Author)
