THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELASTOMERIC VULCANIZATES FOR TRACK PAD APPLICATIONS,

Abstract

Various synthetic elastomers were compounded for improved stress - strain properties at room temperature and at elevated temperatures and low heat build-up or hysteresis. Track pads for service testing by the U. S. Army Tank Automotive Center were fabricated from promising recipes based on: an ethylene propylene terpolymer; a poly (oxy) propylene; an SBR/cis 1,4-polybutadiene blend and a flock filled SBR. The heat transfer characteristics of vulcanizates compounded with various types of carbon black were also studied. In general, the rate of heat transfer was found to increase as the particle size, loading and structure of the filler was increased. (Author)
