RADAR VIDEO DIGITIZER AND AZIMUTH DIGITIZER.

Abstract

The report covers the design, fabrications, and preliminary acceptance testing of an automatic target data proces sor comprising one Radar Video Digitizer (RVD) and one Azimuth Digitizer (AD). The processor, a part of the Advanced Radar Traffic Control System (ARTS) at the Atlanta Terminal Area Tower, accepts radar video and azimuth synchro voltages from an Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR), processes the video, and furnishes a target coordinate message in a format suitable for input to the Track-While-Scan Computer (TWSC). The equipment is also designed to function with an Air Route Surveillance Radar (ARSR). The RVD uses statistical methods in detecting targets and incorporates an automatic clutter elimination feature (ACE) which assures a high probability of detecting those targets otherwise obscured by thermal noise or clutter. Targets are detected by an advanced, double-threshold method.
