POLYPROPYLENE BALLOON STUDY.
Abstract
The project purpose was to: (1) conduct a theoretical design study of a polypropylene balloon, a testing program to evaluate fittings and material, model balloon tests, a full-scale static inflation test and (2) fabricate and flight test a 5000-pound payload balloon after completion of (1) and upon receipt of written instructions from the Scientific Officer. Item (1) has been completed. Evaluation of the premature failure of the full-scale static test balloon shows that although fabrication of a polypropylene balloon is possible, there are still fabrication techniques that need further study. It is possible to seal gores together using GT-301 tape. Laboratory samples of inflation tubes and duct accessories are good. However, on the basis of present knowledge, it is not certain that it is economically practical to fabricate an unsupported polypropylene balloon and work on the contract was suspended. It was proposed that the funds remaining on Nonr-4096(00) be directed to the perfection of a reinforced Mylar (GT-66). (Author)
