STUDY OF THE DESIGN AND BEHAVIOR OF A HYDROFOIL SEMI-SUBMARINE,

Abstract

The results of a feasibility, design, and experimentallydetermined-performance study of an unusual ship design in the 3,000-ton class for high-speed operation in rough waters are presented and discussed. The concept, termed a 'Hydrofoil Semi-Submarine,' is a shallow-running submersible with an Albacore-type main hull incorporating a surface-piercing dihedral hydrofoil system. Test results show that the Hydrofoil Semi-Submarine is, above 35 knots, superior to the conventional destroyer and other novel ship designs, in both horsepower requirement and ship response to wave systems. The results of the program also clearly demonstrate that, with the proper design, this ship concept should pose no serious stability or control problems but should, rather, afford the possibility of much more effective control over the influences of environment than is exhibited by the conventional ship.
