THE STRUCTURE OF HE3 AND H3 FROM HIGH-ENERGY ELECTRON SCATTERING,

Abstract

The structure of the three-nucleon systems He3 and H3 has been the subject of much recent experimental and theoretical investigation. Elastic scattering of high-energy electrons from these nuclei has been used to measure the charge and magnetic form factors of both He3 and H3. Theoretical analysis of these form factors has yielded new information concerning the wave function for the three-nucleon system. An analysis was made of the recent measurements of the electron-proton coincidence cross section from He3 and H3 to obtain additional information on the wave function for these nuclei. An adequate fit to the present data can be obtained using a completely symmetric S-state Irving-Gunn wave function. An admixture of the mixed symmetry S-state larger than about 2% can be excluded.
