RESEARCH INVESTIGATION DIRECTED TOWARD EXTENDING THE USEFUL RANGE OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM.

Abstract

Photon echoes have been observed in ruby. An experimental program in x-ray astronomy has been initiated. The immediate goal of this work is the determination of the polarization of the recently discovered discrete x-ray sources. The method of level-crossing spectroscopy has been extended to the observation of the Stark effect. A precise measurement of the Stark shift of the 3P term of lithium has been completed. Additional metastable autoionizing atomic states have been observed in sodium and cesium. A systematic investigation of the Zeeman quenching of these states in all of the alkali elements was carried out using a new electron multiplier detector arrangement. A series of experiments were done to verify the predictions of Hartmann and Anderson on the effect of rf irradiation on an NMR line shape. (Author)
