NON-PLANAR ARRAY 'THINNING' STUDY.

Abstract

The work reported herein includes (1) evaluation of a systematic method for locating the element positions in a filled-in spherical array based on icosohedral partitioning and preservation of symmetry; (2) Comparison and evaluation of various thinning procedures; (3) Formulation of analytical techniques for calculating the probabilities of main beam and side lobe performance; and (4) Partial completion of computer programs required to generate array patterns for mathematically thinned spherical arrays. The conclusions obtained to date are that maximum symmetry should be exploited to minimize the cost and complexity of spherical arrays, and that thinning rules must be designed which preserve as much useful symmetry as possible.
