MARCH TOWARD ULTRA-HIGH VACUUM,

Abstract

The role of vacuum techniques in the many fields of science and technology is discussed. Light bulbs and electronic tubes are being evacuated; metallurgists and mechanical engineers have begun to refine and cast metals under vacuum conditions; and cold vacuum welding is being attempted. The particle accelerator, the 'heavy weapon' in the science of nuclear energy, also requires a vacuum chamber. In the age when man begins to explore the universe, vacuum techniques can make further contributions to the science of space travel. Through the attainment and utilization of vacuum, physicists have made a big step toward understanding the basic nature of vacuum. Ultra-high vacuum has now become a tool for the physicists to further the knowledge of space, matter atom and vacuum.
