THE MARVEL PROJECT, PART C. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE SHROUDED PROPELLER PROPULSIVE SYSTEM ON THE MARVELLETE AIRCRAFT

Abstract

The object of this report is to develop a reasonably accurate method of designing a shrouded propeller for thrust augmentation. The full scale flight results of shrouded propeller as a pusher type aircraft are presented and compared with the equivalent free propeller and the theoretical results developed from existing theories. The theoretical methods of shrouded propeller design and performance predictions outlined in the report are adequate even though the results tend to be rather optimistic. The static thrust of the shrouded propeller configuration was found to be approximately 100 percent greater than the static thrust of the equivalent open propeller driven by the same horsepower engine. Although the shroud increment of the thrust decreases with an increase in forward velocity the breakeven velocity in this particular configuration was considerably greater than 100 miles per hour.
