NARRATIVE OF CHAIN CRUISE NO. 39, WOODS HOLE TO BERMUDA TO THE ABYSSAL HILLS AND RETURN TO WOODS HOLE, 23 AUGUST-23 SEPTEMBER 1963,

Abstract

CHAIN Cruise 39 was made in two parts, the first from Woods Hole to Bermuda, 23 August to 1 September, and the second from Bermuda to the abyssal-hills area to the southeast and back to Woods Hole, 3 September to 23 September, 1963. The continuous observations carried out on this cruise consisted of echo sounding, measurements of the earth's gravity, and seismic reflection profiling. The program also included calibrations of the outputs of the new high-energy sparker and the new Boomer transducers, evaluation of a matched-filter correlator in the seismic detection system, heat flow measurements with the gravity corer, and rock dredge and camera lowerings. A summary account of the first part of the cruise and a journal of the second constitute the text of this report. Lists of some of the stations and their locations are given in an appendix, and two charts summarize the ship's track. (Author)
