BACKSCATTER FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM REPORT,
Abstract
The backscatter measurement flight test was conducted to fill a gap in the existing terrain reflectivity data at VHF frequencies. A radar system, essentially consisting of a Navy type SK transmitter, a modified Vitro Model 1306 receiver, a TR device to keep the transmitted signal out of the receiver, and a broadbeam sidelooking antenna, was installed in a Beechcraft Queenair aircraft. Returns from flatland, water, city, mountain, and woods terrains were recorded on film. The receiving subsystem was calibrated and various parameters such as peak transmitted power, pulsewidth, and antenna pattern were measured. The film data was read out for downlook angles from 7 to 60 degrees. In general, the city and woods have the highest reflectivity and the flatland and water reflectivities are the lowest. A study of previous reports by NRL and SRI indicates that generalization of reflectivity data from a single area to a general terrain type can be misleading except in gross terms; i.e., =10 db.
