PARAMAGNETIC RELAXATION OF SOME RAREEARTH IONS IN DIAMAGNETIC CRYSTALS,

Abstract

The pulsed saturation method at 8.9 kMc/sec was used to measure the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T sub 1 for Eu(2+), Ho(2+), and Tm(2+) in CaF2, for Yb(3+) in YGG, YA1G, and LGG, for Nd(3+) in YGG and YA1G, and for Sm(3+) in lanthanum ethyl sulphate at low temperatures. Besides the expected direct, Orbach, and Raman processes, a process, 1/T sub 1 varies as T to the 5th power, was observed for Eu(2+) in CaF2 in the temperature region 15K <T <30K. A pronounced anisotropy in T sub 1 for Sm(3+) in LES was also observed. The experimental data are in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the combined Van Vleck-Orbach theory. (Author)
