VARIATION OF ELASTIC MODULI.

Abstract

The variation of the bulk and shear moduli with pressure and temperature in an isotropic medium is considered. The bulk modulus can be evaluated for states at high pressure and temperature by use of the Mie-Gruneisen equation. The shear modulus follows on making additional assumptions, either that the solid exhibits a Debye frequency spectrum and a constant Gruneisen ratio and/or that the Poisson ratio is a constant. The values obtained for the shear modulus are found to be adequate for use in calculations of elastic-plastic wave propagation due to the insensitivity of the results to the variation in shear modulus.
