THE POLARIZATION OF GIANT PULSATIONS AT KIRUNA.

Abstract

The polarizations of four of the five giant pulsations recorded during 1963 at Kiruna (phi = 67.8 degrees N., lambda = 20.4 degrees E.) have been analyzed by a method which has not been used in previous geomagnetic investiga tions. This method of analysis is developed in some detail and gives a quantitative measure of the type and degree of polarization and the principal directions of the resultant vectors is each of three orthogonal planes. In addition, the phase differences between each of the three orthogonal components and the mean or dominant period of the quasi-periodictime variation in each component have been derived from calculated crosscorrelation and autocorrelation functions. For these giant pulsations, attention is drawn to the variance of the vertical component which is of the same order and often larger than the variance of the corresponding north component. Hence, any physical explanation is inadequate if it is based solely on the fieldline propagation of transverse hydromagnetic waves. (Author)
