MAGNETO-IONIC MICROWAVE PROPAGATION EXPERIMENT.

Abstract

The report describes theoretical and experimental work. The characteristic equations for guided propagation along a static magnetic field in some transversally non-homogeneous bounded and unbounded plasmas are derived by the method of non-destructive multiple reflections of a free wave, propagating according to the ray theory. A few specific cases (whistler, QC longitudinal, very-slow waves) are considered in detail. Propagation in plasma slabs not aligned with the magnetic field is also discussed. Experimental work includes a preliminary investigation on the radiation pattern in a plasma of an electric dipole directed along the magnetic field. (Author)
