OBSERVATION OF STATISTICAL FLUCTUATIONS IN OPTICAL SECOND HARMONIC GENERATION,

Abstract

Measurements of the statistical fluctuations in optical second harmonic generation have been made using both short and long time constant detector circuits. The second harmonic was generated by focusing the beam from a standard ruby laser (not Q-switched) on a KDP crystal mounted approximately in the phase-matched orientation. As expected, the measured fluctuations were smaller in the long time constant case. A steady decrease in second harmonic output was observed throughout the measurements. Some possible reasons for this anomalous effect are discussed. (Author)
