ATTENUATION OF STRESS WAVES IN BI-LINEAR MATERIALS,

Abstract

The attenuation of plane stress waves generated by a decaying surface pressure in a bi-linear medium is investigated, to obtain an approximate solution to the problem of a medium with a stress strain diagram of positive curvature. Wave equations are derived, and it is demonstrated that, beyond a given distance from the surface, the intensity of the peak stress and particle velocity depends only on a single parameter. This result is of significance in establishing the relevant physical characteristics of granular soils which are subjected to very high intensity nuclear surface blast pressures. (Author)
