VIBRATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOLID PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTORS.

Abstract

A method is described for automatically surveying the mode shapes of a vibrating cylinder in both the axial and circumferential directions. A complete spectrum of modes of vibration of an empty thin-walled, circular cylinder were obtained for both breathing and beam modes at several values of internal pressure. Similar, although not as complete, data were obtained for the same cylinder having a grain of inert solid propellant bonded in its interior. Good correlation with theoretical considerations was obtained for much of these data. Damping was compared for both configurations, vibrating transversely as beams and in one of the breathing modes. Several experimental methods were developed for measuring the dynamic mechanical properties of the solid propellant. (Author)
