THE NATURE OF NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS,

Abstract

There are several hypotheses on the nature of noctilucent clouds, but the two deserving most attention and which are discussed here, are the condensation hypothesis and the meteoric hypothesis. The first hypothesis states that noctilucent clouds result from the condensation of water vapor transported by ascending air currents from the troposphere into the upper atmosphere as a result of vertical mixing. The second hypothesis states that noctilucent clouds consist of mineral particles of silicate composition and of extraterrestrial origin.
