TIMING OF CHECK-OUT BEFORE A CRITICAL EVENT,
Abstract
A critical event is scheduled at time T, at which time it is essential for a given system, with constant failure rate, to be operable. Let out 'pre-event period,' or countdown for this critical event start at time zero. Suppose we perform precisely one checkout (assumed instantaneous) of the system during the pre-event period. If the system is found to be down, we immediately initiate repair (the question of whether this procedure is optimal has been considered in Ref. 1); the duration of repair follows a known distribution (not dependent on the nature of the system failure).
