MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER COMPONENT DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

Techniques for designing filters, ferrite devices, diode mounts, and radiation detectors in oversize waveguide are being investigated. The filters constructed and evaluated were: a 33-Gc four-port dielectric slab filter, a 330-Gc two-port dielectric-slab filter in its low-frequency region, a 33-Gc one-and two-resonator band-pass filter using etched holes in plating on quartz as susceptance elements, and also a 147-Gc band-pass filter using holes in metal plates as susceptance elements. In addition, a 330-Gc four-port dielectric-slab filter structure was constructed. Measurements of ferrite dielectric constants, loss tangents, and mismatches were made. Low-loss Faraday rotation was demonstrated. An oversize-waveguide focused diode mount and a saturation mount were constructed and tested. The study of bulk semiconductors as radiation detectors and mixers was extended to the case where hot electrons give rise to the detectable effect. Preliminary numerical data is presented for n-type Indium-Antimonide.
